    San Antonio International Airport (SAT): Approximate driving time is 20 minutes and distance is 10 miles.

    Driving directions from SAT: Follow signs to Rte. 281 south and continue on I-37 south. Take Exit 141B (Houston St./The Alamo) and turn right on E. Houston. Turn left on Bonham St., then right on Crockett St. Turn left on Alamo Plaza and the hotel is on the left.

    Getting there: The SA TRANS airport shuttle is located right outside the San Antonio Airport baggage claim, and is the best option for solo travelers ($5–15). Groups of two or more will probably find it more economical to take a taxi ($16–25). (Fees are subject to change without notice.)

    Getting around: The Alamo and many other attractions are a short walk from the hotel. A convenient and economical way to reach other destinations is the VIA Streetcars (less than $5; fees subject to change without notice). The streetcar stop is adjacent to the hotel and provides transport around downtown, and express service to SeaWorld and Fiesta Six Flags.

    Colonial Room Restaurant - This stately neoclassical restaurant is a white-tablecloth affair with large arched windows overlooking a lush tropical garden. The specialty is American regional cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The restaurant's signature mango ice cream has been on the menu for a century. The Colonial Room serves a lunch buffet Monday through Friday, and Sunday brunch.

    The Menger Bar - Teddy Roosevelt reportedly recruited some of his Rough Riders from this pub-style bar built in 1887. A replica of London's House of Lords Pub, it has a gleaming cherry paneled ceiling and walls, booth seating, and glass cabinets. The bar offers a selection of fine cigars and accommodates poolside drink requests during limited hours.

    What to expect: Built next door to the Alamo in 1859, the hotel has hosted guests such as Mae West, Teddy Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, Oscar Wilde, and other figures of history. Along with modern updates to the hotel, guests find the original neoclassical Victorian lobby, fine antiques and artwork, the bountiful courtyard garden, historic photographs, and a guest registry dating from a century ago. The cattle-trading guests of the Victorian era have changed to vacationers and business travelers today.

    Amenity highlights: A mirrored fitness center with cardio equipment and a TV overlooks the pool area. The secluded courtyard surrounds a large swimming pool and spa tub, shaded by old-growth palm trees and lush botanicals.
